He worked along with his older brother in the short fantasy mystery film, The Fear, in 2010.

Alex Lawther was inspired to pursue a career in acting because as a child, he used to make up his own games to keep himself entertained.

During his school years, he was cast as Ratty in The Wind in the Willows.

He made his first film appearance by bringing to life the titular character in the biographical music drama film, Benjamin Britten: Peace and Conflict, in 2013. Written and directed by Tony Britten, other members of the film’s cast included actors John Hurt, Joseph Horovitz, and Sue Phipps.

Alex Lawther has starred as James, a 17-year-old who believes he is a psychopath, in the British dark comedy-drama television show, The End of the F***ing World, which is based on the novel of the same name by Charles Forsman. Other lead cast members of the show include actors Jessica Barden, Gemma Whelan, Steve Oram, and Christine Bottomley.

In 2014, he appeared as Young Alan Turing in the American historical drama film, The Imitation Game, whose lead cast comprised of Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, and Mark Strong. For this role, Alex Lawther won the London Film Critics’ Circle Award in the “Young British Performer of the Year” category and was also nominated for a BFI London Film Festival Award in the “Best British Newcomer” category.

Over the years, he has also played a variety of roles in several theatre productions such as John Blakemore in South Downs at Chichester Festival Theatre and Harold Pinter Theatre, Ryan in Fault Lines at Hampstead Theatre, and Sam in The Jungle at Young Vic Theatre & Playhouse Theatre and St. Ann’s Warehouse.
